PostSubject: The Death Hunt and ecology   Wed Nov 12, 2014 9:23 pm

Early in year 16, Peter Max and co. are planning the second Death Hunt. See:http://www.swcombine.com/forum/thread.php?thread=65756&page=0

Assuming a good turn out and taking into consideration their hefty kill requirements, should we protest this until more research is done into the potential impact on fauna populations?

We should contact Mr Max and present him with evidence that excessive hunting may result in extinction.

I completely agree with this. They are hunting mostly predators, which, following the trophic levels of such ecosystems, means that they are shooting the level with the least individuals. This could indeed lead to extinction and destabilization of the local ecosystem.

Max has offered to be open to any study we want to carry out, but will not delay the hunt. Please share your information in his thread to get the word out.

He also said that he can not or will he control the amount of game hunted.

This cannot be allowed to happen.

I too find this hunt abhorrent! Derra is home to several viruses that have yet to be properly studied. If these types of hunts go unchecked we very well stand to loose our only means of fighting and curing the viruses which pose a galactic threat. I believe it is in the best interests of scholars, scientists, and the galactic community to protest this hunt and others like it.

It might be politically challenging to protest the practice of Hunting in general. However, we make a GNS and declare that we are asking Death Watch to provide proof that their competition will not harm the fauna population to the brink of extinction.

Is it possible that a GNS would come too late?

Perhaps we need to be there physically and demonstrate against it, or to protect the wildlife from the hunters.

Not enough of us would make it to hold a significant demonstration. Besides, the Hunt will likely be spread out across the planet. Effective Street Protest requires density and can only be effective in large population areas.

A formal protest over the GNS would show that we are interested in more than being an annoyance, but have specific grievances which we could then post to the GNS. The GNS provides galactic visibility.

Just noticed Peter Max's discussion on the public holonet regarding the Hunt.

He does make a few excellent points, primarily that larger groups that use Derra for live fire training are likely to have a greater effect on the fauna than his smaller group.

This represents a an opportunity to use the Derra Death Hunt as a Case Study for the effects of Hunting Expeditions on Ecology.

My issue is that not enough work has been done on the Ecology and fauna themselves, aside from the effects of such events as the Hunt.

I'll begin working on a paper shortly which will examine individual groups of species a little more intimately to help build a stronger argument against such events as the hunt if they are deemed to be of detriment.
