Well, I made a valiant effort, but seven days just isn't enough for me to write something of a quality that I would be happy with. I'll submit it for the next one. Smile

My apologies for the lateness of my submission, and for changing the subject matter.

I had originally intended to discuss the motives and operations behind the Metamorphosis Plague, but much of the information I've gathered remains classified, and was deemed too dangerous to be released to the public at this time.

You gotta love bureaucracies. (;8,)

I will start reading the other entrants tonight, and will begin posting feedback for each one. I've skimmed over them all so far, and it seems I some interesting material ahead of me.

Congratulations on everyone who submitted their work. I imagine it would have been easier to skin a live Rancor, so kudos to you all.

Paul finds his way into the large auditorium and takes a seat near the back, where we can fit. Eagerly awaiting the announcement of the winners for this year, his mind is racing with more research projects he felt he could accomplish in time for next year.

Dressed in an all-white dinner jacket and black dress pants, Belloq entered the auditorium some time after Mr. Luz, and gave him an unusual "double-hand-index-finger-shooter" gesture, seemingly intended to suggest either "You're the man!" or "I'm gonna get you!"

But the wide smile on the Whiphid's face suggested the former was the more likely.

Torc files his way into the auditorium dressed differently than he was normally recognized in. Instead of his normal battered tunic and cloak that he used in the field he had a gray suit and a black trench coat on. And of course an emerald bow tie to top off the look. He leaned against a wall and crossed his arms with a smile waiting for the winners announcement.

Ruben stopped on the threshold of the auditorium and looked around. This was the very first time he participated in an official ceremony and was not sure how to act.
He asked for advice on how to dress for the occasion, and eventually he opted to buy some elegant clothes from the Zala's Emporium.

Although he was used to uniforms for his past military life, he was not at ease in that tuxedo. Ruben walked towards the first rows of seats and sat down in the first available seat.

While waiting for the ceremony to start, he read the papers submitted by the other contestants on his datapad.

The big Whiphid was trying to meditate as best he could to pass the time. His eyes were closed, his head hovered centimeters above the carpeted floor, his patent-leather shoes pointed to the auditorium ceiling far overhead and his arms were crossed against his chest like some kind of upside-down sleeping Anzati. The media show on the big holovid screen that took up two-third's of the auditorium's stage was easy to ignore: silent tri-vids of various locations on the "Must See Sites of the Galaxy," brought to you by contest sponsor Galactic Tours and Excursions, caused no interruption at all.

What did interrupt his meditation, though, were the occasional advertisers who used sound to accompany their pitch:

"When I had to visit the Afterlife Casino for their billion-credit sabacc tournament, being held deep in the Unknown Region," said a tri-vid Whiphid in an oversized white after-dinner jacket, "I couldn't buy from just any clothier. I mean, look at me: if this thing didn't fit, where would I have gotten a tailor to adjust it, three-hundred thousand light years from home? That's why I went to Zala's Emporium. Suit, shirt, shoes -- I even had them make me a special durasteel attaché case."

While the meditating Belloq shrugged his shoulders, the tri-vid version dodged an incoming blast shot from an unseen assailant, and held up his silvered briefcase to catch two more incoming blasts. "Zala's knows exactly what kind of details the modern sentient-about-town needs to have for those occasions that don't call for full battle armor, yet you still want that little bit of...protection."

The onscreen Whiphid pressed a hidden stud on the shiny briefcases's handle, and the silver-and-copper handle came completely free of the case. Another flick of his right hand, and the handle transformed into the hilt of a thrumming green-bladed lightsaber. The Whiphid smiled, casually deflecting a couple of additional blaster shots. One of the ricochets hit a shooter offscreen, to the sounds of the shooter yelling, "Ow! Kee-rist, Belloq! Cut that out!"

"Zala's Emporium," the tri-vid Belloq said proudly as he ran his black-taloned fingers down the lapels of his white jacket. "For all your gentlemanly needs."

The meditating, upside-down Whiphid against the wall harrumphed audibly. "Sell-out," he muttered.

Qardin strolls into the auditorium casually, trying not to make a sound. he finds himself a seat at the back of the room. Before taking a seat, he readjusts his suit, dusts of a spot on his jacket and sits down. He puts his bag down and takes out the summaries he typed from the other entrents' papers. Readjusting his shades, he starts reading, his fingers tossing around an old coin.

Rennek straightened his robes and walked with purpose towards the raised dais which over looked the gathering scholars, nodding his appreciating towards them before commencing.

"My fellow Scholars, please let me first welcome you and thank you for participating in this years Pursuit." He smiled warmly, his joy at the level of participation and the quality of the entrants transmitting through the gesture. "We have seen Scholars look into a variety of subjects, from Religion to politics and even Geology, each bringing their own unique experience, talent and academic prowess with them to enhance both the content, and experience for the readers."

He looked about at the scholars, proud of the achievement that the guild had become a home to some of the greatest minds in the galaxy, who chose to converse, share and debate on topics that otherwise would be left unquestioned.

"Of course, the search for results is n achievement in itself, but one cannot purchase a lab with accomplishment alone and its with this thought in mind that we have the prizes we do for the best contributions to the pursuit. All those who participated with qualifying entries will be issued a data pad shortly, as well as honours with regard to SG accreditation. Please rest assured that my feedback on all of the papers will be posted shortly on each individual entry for you all to see. I say this without pre tense, it was incredibly difficult for me to choose the winners this year, the quality being as high as it was, but difficult or not, I had to. With that, it only leaves me to announce this years top 3 in reverse order." A hush fell on the assembled crowd in anticipation.

"In 3rd place, securing a prize of 5m Cr is Paul Luz's piece exploring the The Conflict on Jandur and the Risks of Corporatocracy" Rennek waiting for the round of applause to end before continuing.

"In 2nd place, securing a prize of a HCT-2001 Dragonboat-Class Freighter is Prard`aga Rono's piece exploring the economic rise and fall of the Nova Crystal called The Crystalline Bubble" Again, Rennek pause for applause.

"In first place, and this year's pursuit champion, securing the first prize of 25m Cr having narrowly missed out last year, is Belloq Tull, for his piece Masters of Light and Shadow: The Disciples of Twilight" A large round of applause echoed through the halls as Rennek invited Scholar Tull to the stage for his prize giving and acceptance speech.

When Belloq heard Rennek announce Mr. Luz' name as the third place winner, he snapped back to consciousness. He'd been meditating so deeply that he'd completely failed to react to the well-manicrured humanoid taking the stage and giving the opening sentences of the award presentation.

His Whiphid body dropped to the ground a little rougher than he'd intended to, then tumbled into a sitting position as he heard the title of the piece, "The Conflict on Jandur and the Risks of Corporatocracy." He chuckled to himself as he brushed off the shoulders of his white dinner jacket. Much of Mr. Luz' paper had revolved around Belloq's own actions on that volcanic piece of nothing out in the middle of nowhere. Belloq was proud of his role in the defense of that planet, even those portions that Mr. Luz never got to hear due to their classification status being active. Still, that was a fine piece of investigative reporting, as well as a vital bit of historical documentation. If Belloq had been asked to vote, that's where his first place choice would have gone.

He was struggling to his feet when Rennek announced the second prize had gone to Prard`aga Rono's for his look into the economy surrounding the Nova crystal, entitled "The Crystalline Bubble." Belloq chuckled again as he smoothed the lines of his jacket. There was a time, back before he joined The Wraiths, when he had proposed a mission to collapse the Nova crystal market by making the Dynasty's holdings temporarily unavailable. Back then, Belloq had described 'temporary' to his superiors as being a few thousand years or so.

As the identity of the first two winners sunk in, he braced himself as he realized he might miss out on the prizes this year, unlike last year when Paul and he had finished first and second. There were a number of other equally well-deserving authors and papers this year, including Ruban Wan's interesting report on the Galactic Museum. The only difference Belloq had with that well-written paper was his conclusion: if the problem was that the Museum wasn't being visited enough, an easy answer was simply to withhold a sentient's monthly salary until they presented a ticket stub from a recent visit. That'd sure boost attendance, Belloq thought to himself.

He even enjoyed the report on the notorious Order 66 as presented by Fukara Mist. Belloq looked around the auditorium for 'the Mist,' but didn't spot her. A shame, he thought: he'd have enjoyed seeing what kind of sentient was willing to openly challenge the Empire and its practices without any apparent fear of reprisal. Her paper wasn't just a well-supported argument; it was a brave and daring position to hold.

Then, in the midst of all his internal musings, he heard Mr. Luz cheering and looking in his direction, asking for a speech. Onstage, Rennek was also applauding in his direction and indicating he should join him.

Belloq was momentarily confused. He looked behind him, expecting to see some other sentient standing close by. But when he turned back to face the stage and pointed one of his giant three-clawed Whiphid hands towards his own chest, Rennek nodded even more insistently.

Well, Belloq said to himself, as he began the interminable walk towards the podium, wondering when the auditorium had added what seemed like another hundred meters to its size, I guess now would be a good time to compose an acceptance speech.

Receiving the honorarium from Rennek was a blur, as was the rest of the applause from the auditorium. At some point, Belloq found himself alone before the plassteel lectern, a silent and anxious audience awaiting his words. He had nothing prepared, no chosen topic to even begin with. So as with much of his life, he quieted his mind and let the Force direct him.

"Drafting a research paper," he began slowly, staring at the printed honorarium ins his massive hands, "is not that different from combat. In both arenas, there's a great deal of preparation that needs to be done prior to the final outcome. There are best practices that need to be followed, the 'right' way to do things, methods that have been refined by countless numbers of experts who've gone before us. And in both cases, once you think you're done, it's not unusual to have a few stray pot-shots flying at your head."

A gentle wave of laughter rolled through the auditorium at his comment. The Whiphid didn't acknowledge them, but continued right on.

"There are differences, of course, the biggest one being that the outcome of combat needs no external approval or sanction to determine its success: if you survive the encounter and the bad guy, or crazed creature, is eliminated, then you know you've succeeded. No one beyond the battlefield needs to know, and frankly, ninety-nine pre cent of the time, such combat goes wholly unnoticed by the so-called civilized world -- who might not be all that civilized if it weren't for the handful of peacekeepers who risk their lives day in and day out to keep them safe and protected."

The attitude of the audience began to shift a little, as more than a few sentients wondered where Belloq was heading with these rambling comments.

Belloq kept on talking, not missing a beat. "But academic papers, true research in and of itself, they need to be shared with the public at large, passed around like a loaf of life-sustaining bread to those starving for true knowledge. I'm not talking about the poo-doo the holchannels spew out all day, every day. Not the boring advtertainment shows we're constantly being force-fed, and surely not the GNS fiction that's spun so hard it's like watching an accretion disk feed matter into a black hole."

"We here in the Guild," he said, waving his taloned hands to encompass the auditorium and the implied space beyond it, "are blessed with a selection of true academic treasures that deserve to be read and studied by all of the galaxy, and yet, most of these papers will never be seen by more then a handful of sentients. It's -- well, like Ruban Wan said in his paper on the Galactic Museum: the galaxy as a whole is 'too occupied in fostering economy, disregarding other aspects of life.' For most of us, it's a darn shame more people aren't willing to visit such quality treasures."

The Whiphid finally looked up and saw the many faces staring back at him, some working at comprehending his words, others with a look that might have been gratitude on their faces, or at the very least, something approaching agreement.

As a rather embarrassed look spread across his face, Belloq folded the honorarium and slid it into an inner pocket of his dinner jacket. "My thanks go out to Mr. Cor and the rest of the Guild for this generous award, as well as the recognition that goes with it. All I can say is, I will always appreciate this honor very deeply, 'till the end of my days."

With that, the Whiphid whirled about and headed for the wings of the stage. He located an emergency exit and, heedless of the warnings, pushed it open, turned towards the hangar area and his waiting ship, and began striding away at a very brisk pace.

A well deserved congratulations to the winners of this years Scholarly Pursuit. I was very excited about this opportunity and as a result, I hastily wrote my paper and was the first to submit. My next contribution will be thought out a little better and I will be studying the format of other submissions in an effort to increase the quality of my next paper.

Once again, congratulations!
